Judge two has been reading, rating some of the contest entries. She agreed some great writers on the site, imaginations with the entries. Its hard to vote for just one- but she did her best. Seeing as she has a Major in English Lit, past editor of collage newspaper, and published author- its as good as you can get.

Collage Professor, Speaker, Social Worker for 34 years with a Master in Social Work, LSW for 20 years of that time. Master in Public Admin, and close to a Doctorate in Educational leadership. *she hates - but needs to do her dissertation*

So yes- I pulled in the brain of the group. hahaha...

She reads this she will kick my butt- but I'm proud of her. :D

Remember- the Halloween contest ends tonight.

And Happy Halloween!

Since sleep is not coming tonight to visit me- I believe I will do the ritual I had planned for tonight. Time to lite some candles, music playing softly. Read my tarot cards. Invite loved ones in. And a visit to my darker side as the year turns.

Time to ask myself what I need to change in my life. List those who bring me joy. Those who do not, drain me. When you start listing your blessings- it is good when the list is very much longer then the list of unwanted things, feelings, people.

Now the list are made, a cleaning hot shower as the candle scent fills my room. Then i will start my ritual. Just feels like now, this time is right. Guidance from those who have pasted, and my own inner wisdom. Facing what needs changed to please me.

Blessed Samhain to all. The wheel turns.

Friend of mine is getting new kitchen appliances. Gas. I am not a fan of gas. While I like cooking on gas, I would never have gas in my home.

Back when I was in my late teens, my parents was leaving town for a weekend trip. Saturday. Storms. But they had the motorhome and was going to just get away for a quick trip. It was just after noon as we was closed, the business.

We got a call from a insurance agent we knew- telling us he needed us to come to the next town as he had a home that had a gas fire, but it was only a small area. But due to the damage to the home, it needed packed up and taken out. Dad shocked us, as he said we could handle it, and he and Mom, along with our puppy, left us to deal with it.

Its nothing new- bad storms? Insurance calls. Tornado? Insurance calls. Fire? Flood? Yeap, we are up. And it is always on weekend or nights it seems. But they know it will cost overtime, and they paid well. And- well let's face it folks, this was before a lot of health/ job rules. We tracked in flood water, mud, over debris, into unsafe homes and business. But when they called- we went. Never turned down a job. Have we not had the men power? Yes. But that is when a tornado hit and we just kept taking out trucks. "I got a truck, but you will have to load it." Many a time you had to deal with the police not willing to let you into the areas, but small town... they knew we wasn't there to just sightsee.

This time it was just us- me and my oldest sister. We made some calls to our crew and one agree to come in. The others said they would be in a few hours. So it was decided we would go, start packing. The rest will catch up with us in a few hours. So we load up packing cartons into the packing truck, and off we went. I should point out- insurance adjustors always tell you its nothing big, then you find out different.

We pulled up to the home and it has police, gas company, fire department vehicles and men around it. See- while it had a fire, it was a small one in one bathroom. Seems the family had called the gas company the day before, saying they had a leak, smell the gas. They sent a man out, found nothing, but he turned off the gas. Hours later they called the gas company again as the rotten egg smell had not gone away. They refused to come out again as the gas was turned off. Told them it just lingering in the air.

So the family went to bed. The hubby, father of the family went into the bathroom on the main floor of this 2 story beautiful home, and seems he lite a cigarette. And BOOM! We stood, outside that home, and see the bathroom blacken, fire damage. But it wasn't the bathroom that shocked us. What shocked us was the ends of the home, on both side, was blown out. You can look right into the home, see everything. Seems the build up of gas made a explosion.

Seems the gas line into the house was leaking, so the 'turn off' did not stop the leak. And this man was burned horribly, 3rd degree burns. He passed away as we was packing up his home, trying to save what we could for the family as storms moved in. The fire department stayed with us, the police too. They used the headlights, lights to light up the home as the power was off to it. The gas on the street, off from a junction it seems. It was a busy place as most came to just see it, such a stunning image. This big beautiful home, sides laying in the yard.

I remember well being upstairs, in a bedroom, and opening the closet. To see the red lights of the police cars, the fire trucks, behind the clothing as no wall was behind the clothes. It was surreal, that we was in a home with only a front, roof and back. I felt so sorry for the family. Such a nice home, now a horror for them, the loss of a life.

This was in the early 80's. Before they would never let us in the home due to the danger, the OSHA stopping it. We worked into the night, in the rain, and saved what we could for the family. But it has always stuck with me. That power of gas and what it could do. And how lucky the family was, really, that it did not just blow up the whole house.

I would drive by the home, see what became of it. It stood, just the front, back, roof for many years. Grass grew up. Lawsuits, after lawsuits. I know the family, minus the father, husband- they bought a new house, moved in as we moved them in. I had one firm rule for the crew- do not ask, do not bring it up- keep your mouths shut. And they did as far as I know. It is just something you don't talk about with the family. And besides- it was in the news enough.

Years later the house finally fell down. Then it came the time I drove by to see the lot had been cleared off. Sell sign. It was finally sold to a company that turned it into the parking lot of a business they built on a lot next to it. In a way I was glad no other home was built.

Anytime anyone talks of gas in a home- I still think of that bathroom. Of standing there, thinking--- why am I seeing the bathroom from the outside? Why is the wall laying on the ground? What the hell happened that could do that? And why I will never have gas in my home.

We have gas heat.... It scares me... but until we get a house and not the condo we live in, it is what it is... I won't cook on a gas stove... scares the hell outta me to even consider it. Our water heater use to be gas too... scared me to have to mess with the pilot light... its electric now. I remember there being a gas leak in the bathroom where the water heater was and they had to come out and fix it... thankfully they found it and did indeed fix it, but yes.... it all frightens me.

Devil eggs?

How do you make them?

SOME PEOPLE dislike the use of vinegar in them. They just use mayo, mustard. Or they put strange shit in them to give them flavors .. that are just wrong.

SO- how do you make your devil eggs?

Note---- if you don't use vinegar, just walk right back out of this journal.... just saying.

I heard it from CtD, OS, Vodka. No more vinegar haters!

As bad as sweet cornbread, or kettle popcorn.

Anyone else watching the Disney Goosebumps? :) I remember these from long past.

Between that and the show The Fall of the House Usher- any free time this weekend will be in front of the TV.

:)

Well, have tablet, will travel outside to the porch for some peace that only nature can provide me. To rain but- that is what the porch is for.

Light a few candles, turn on the Halloween lights, and enjoy.

New item came early- a new lens. Hoping to get time to play with it over the weekend. See about some moon shots, if the weather will hold off. If not, be nice to get a feel for the 600mm lens. :) Might have to break out some bird feed, peanuts and get the birds to model for me.

Long day- thinking its going to be a early bedtime for me. Lots to do tomorrow. And I want to watch a movie with Vodka and OldSoul. Use VR chat as our IM, as we watch our first movie together. :D That should be fun.

If you want to join in on the movie night- hit me up in PM, get the info. ;)

I have decided that I could do the retirement thing.

While I would like to sleep when I want, not be limited by an alarm clock, I would like to travel too.

Friends of ours is traveling to Maine. She is sending photos to us. Sharing her trip, the beauty of the area. Makes me miss the ability to just pack a bag, jump in the car and go.

Not that I ever really had that ability. I did when we had a weekend caregiver, before the virus. Now I'm tied down and evey a weekend trip would take planning.

One day I want the ability to travel. To go into a area, stay at a clean nice place for a few weeks. Use it as my base, travel and branch out from there.

So much beauty in the United States I have not seen. But every year, getting older....family responsibilities.

Is it ever going to happen, I ask myself?

Hello darkness, my old friend.
Why am I awake at 4:35 a.m.?
Your whispers of lies again
Waking me with doubt
And feeling sad
But that is all OK
As I have a handle
On your game.

So my darkness
Go fuck yourself
As the joy in my life
Is not yours to steal.

Curling up to count
Flying jackolantern
Eyes closed
Thinking of those
I love and who
Love me.
The ones strong enough
To stand beside me.

Fuck you darkness
Flipping you the bird
As I am going to sleep.

We each understand, girlie, believe me. I typically sleep for about three hours, and then I find myself lying awake, staring at the insides of my eyelids for who knows how long. If it isn't memories that I won't publicly mention, then it's straight up 'depression' (I don't use that word often, mind you) induced insomnia.
Trust me, I know, it's torture on the mind.
And I'm about as nocturnal as it gets, yet I'm awake at half past 9, when everyone else is starting their work day.

Can't believe it's the first of October. October is my favorite time of the year. When I don't feel bad about all the cobwebs and dust on the porches. Or the ones inside even. ;)

The days are growing shorter as the night takes the stage more and more. Temperatures drop into the range that you are able to sit outside as you watch the moon rise a beautiful orange tone before changing to the magical white in the dark sky. While the full moon is special, I always loved the tiny sliver as the moon phase goes toward the dark moon. And that time when the darkness give over to the sun as it raises.

This time of the year speaks to my darker side. Before winter's cold sends us inside, it speaks of the Underworld to me. Hecate. The Myth of Hades and Persephone. The Great Hunt. Of the veil thinning between the world's, visits with those we have lost. Wisdom remembered. Lessons renewed, handed down from generations to generations. The wise woman phase of my life.

While the darkness gathers we also have the colors. Or orange lights being strung on the porch, pumpkins placed on each porch steps. Colorful splash of mums. The trees turn into work of art, as you walk among the blanket of leaves on the ground. Even the musky scent of dead leaves ties into the season. The snap, crackling of wood as the campfire sends sparkes up into the crisp night air.

Time off coziness. Of blankets added to the bed, a throw placed on the couch. The comfort if a sweater as you sit, letting the car warm up. The time before the scrapping of the ice off the windshields. Of hot chocolate, stews, and soups. Scents of fresh bread and spice cake.

This...this time the season goes from harvest to death. When nature's season turns inward, I look forward to this shift more then any other. As I feel like I also shift, take stock as the year begins again soon. I start to think of things in my life I need to let go. Of forgiveness. Of grace. Of love that I seek. Mostly for myself as I age, having the wheel of time just turn another spoke of my life. One thing is clear at this point in my life- You are the only one responsible, capable to give you peace. To understand your own feelings. Your needs. And to take the steps you need and want to be happy.

And with that...

Happy Fall everyone. I hope it is magical for you as it has always been for me. Merry Be.
